clip2A thorough three-part assessment will be completed once our Consultation Request Form is returned by the treating physician.

An assessment package can be sent to the patient prior to the first meeting with Dr. Bilkey, or the patient may receive this package from Sandra at their first visit to the clinic.

This assessment package includes a series of rating scales and questionnaires regarding ADHD and its impairments. Information gathered from the package and interviews will also aid Dr. Bilkey in identifying comorbidities that may overlap with ADHD. We have a sub-specialty in the area of assessment of students at universities and colleges in the province and conduct consultation liaison ADHD assessments for many of the special services centres at these institutions.

For the first or second visit to the clinic, patients will be asked to bring along a significant other – a spouse, parent, sibling or friend – who knows the patient well and who can provide background information as a collateral historian.

Dr. Bilkey will complete a full clinical examination before providing feedback in the third session. During this session, he will discuss the diagnosis and treatment options. He will give informed consent regarding medication recommendations to ensure patients are aware of both the benefits of medications, but also their side-effects. Recommendations will also be given with regard to ADHD coaching, and referrals may be made to family or marriage counsellors who have a strong knowledge base with regard to ADHD and its affect on the family. If necessary, referrals can also be made to psychologists who can conduct psychoeducational evaluations, to addictions counsellors or to other psychiatric specialists.

Following this thorough evaluation, a report will be completed outlining recommendations to the treating physician.

Fees

The sessions with Dr. Bilkey are covered by OHIP. However, the extensive assessment package and computer screening tools are psychological tests, and are therefore not covered by OHIP. For this part of the assessment, the fee is $1,000.
